Why Did Christ Have To Die On The Cross?

When we take the time to look around and really see God’s creation, we can see how God took such care to all the little details when He created each and every intricate detail of the different things God created; the birds that we enjoy listening to as they sing in the morning, the beautiful flowers that we enjoy looking at as they are beginning to bloom, the wonderful aroma of fresh brewed coffee, the mouth watering taste of a fresh cinnamon roll from the oven, and the warmth of a fleece blanket on a cold, rainy day. We can enjoy so many different creations and gifts from God, but Christ dying on the cross for our sins is the absolute greatest gift that we could ever accept from God.

Why did Christ have to die on the cross? Christ was born, lived as a living sacrifice and died for our sins, because we have been corrupt since Adam disobeyed God in the garden and ate of the forbidden fruit. Since that time, we have been blinded by our sins to find our way back to God. Yet, God loves us and desires that we be reunited with Him. Christ, God’s son came to earth to make our reconciliation with God possible. “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:28, NIV). Christ died on the cross as our substitute for atonement. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21, NIV).

The Apostle Paul reminds us “For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures” (1 Corinthians 15:3,4, NIV).

Why did Christ have to die for our sins? “For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him” (John 3:17, NIV).

Christ, God’s Son, came to earth to reunite us with God through the ultimate sacrifice of his life, in which he became a living sacrifice. He took the punishment for our sins when He gave his life and died on the cross. If Christ had not died on the cross to take our place, we would be forever separated from God. “If you declare with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved” (Romans 10:9,10, NIV). We are covered by His blood through His sacrificial death, our sins are paid for by his blood, and we no longer have to die an eternal death.
