Sugar syrup
Ratios are by weight. Use plain white cane or beet sugar — never brown sugar, molasses or raw sugar, which upset bees’ guts. Warm water helps it dissolve; don’t boil it.
Honey on the hive
A full deep frame holds about 6 lb of honey, a medium about 4 lb, a shallow about 2½ lb. Leave the bees what they need for winter before harvesting.
Winter stores
Feed 2:1 syrup in early fall while days are still warm enough for bees to take it down and cure it. Hefting the back of the hive is the quick check — it should feel like it’s nailed down.
Keeping Bees Well
Log each inspection in a minute — eggs seen, brood, stores, queen cells — and pick when to look again. Count mites as mites per 100 bees so you know when to treat, and the tracker reminds you when treatment strips come out and to count again afterwards. A beekeeping calendar timed from your frost dates covers swarm season, honey supers, the late-summer mite check and getting hives ready for winter. “My son, eat thou honey, because it is good.” — Proverbs 24:13
