What goes in a project record book

Most 4-H and FFA record books ask for the same things, and this page keeps them as you go so the end-of-year book is mostly done:

  • Goals — what the member wants to learn and achieve.
  • Money — every dollar spent on the animal or project and every dollar earned, with profit or loss.
  • Weights — regular weigh-ins with gain and average daily gain, and cost per pound of gain for market animals.
  • Time and activities — hours worked, club meetings, demonstrations, community service and leadership.
  • Shows and fairs — where the project was shown and how it placed, with any premiums.
  • What I learned — the member’s own reflection, in their words.

When it’s finished, open the record book and print it or save it as a PDF from your browser. Your county or club may have its own form; the totals here make it quick to copy over.

“Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6

Raising Good Stewards

Start a project for each child: a market lamb, laying hens, a garden, baking or woodworking. Add what it costs and earns, regular weigh-ins (the daily gain is worked out for you), hours, club activities and show results as you go. At the end, the child writes what they learned and the record book is ready to print. Children can be added to your household as chore hands so they keep their own records. “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” — Proverbs 22:6
