Grower’s guide — typical numbers
| Crop | Seed an acre | Days to harvest | Bushel weight | Store at | At harvest |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Corn (field) | 30,000–34,000 seeds (about 0.4 bu) | 115 | 56 lb | 15.5% | Combine at 20–25% moisture and dry to 15.5%, or let it dry down in the field to about 18%. |
| Popcorn | 24,000–28,000 seeds (about 8–10 lb) | 110 | 56 lb | 13.5% | Pops best at 13–14% moisture. Let it dry on the stalk, then cure in a dry, airy place. |
| Rice | 80–120 lb drilled | 120 | 45 lb | 12.5% | Drain the field 2–3 weeks before harvest. Harvest rough rice at 18–22% and dry slowly to 12–13%. |
| Wheat | 1.5–2 bu (90–120 lb) | 240 | 60 lb | 13.5% | Winter wheat is sown in fall and cut early summer at 13–15% moisture. |
| Oats | 2–3 bu (64–96 lb) | 100 | 32 lb | 13.0% | Harvest when the heads turn tan and the kernels are hard, at about 13%. |
| Barley | 1.5–2 bu (72–96 lb) | 90 | 48 lb | 13.0% | Harvest at 13–14% moisture when the heads bend over. |
| Rye (grain) | 1.5–2 bu (84–112 lb) | 270 | 56 lb | 13.5% | Sown in fall, harvested in early summer at 13–14%. |
| Grain sorghum (milo) | 5–8 lb | 115 | 56 lb | 13.0% | Harvest after a killing frost or desiccation, at 13–14%. |
| Millet | 15–25 lb | 75 | 50 lb | 12.0% | Swath when most seeds are ripe; it shatters easily. |
| Buckwheat | 50–70 lb | 80 | 48 lb | 16.0% | Swath when about three quarters of the seeds are brown; it keeps flowering. |
| Soybeans | 140,000 seeds (about 1 bu) | 115 | 60 lb | 13.0% | Harvest when pods rattle and beans are 13%; much drier and they split and shatter. |
| Dry beans (pinto, black, navy…) | 60–90 lb | 95 | 60 lb | 15.0% | Pull or cut when most pods are dry; thresh at 16–18% and store at 15% or less. |
| Field peas / dry peas | 2–3 bu (120–180 lb) | 90 | 60 lb | 14.0% | Harvest when pods are dry and the peas are hard. |
Typical figures for planning. Your seed tag, local extension office and buyer’s moisture and test-weight rules come first. Store grain cool, dry and sealed from rodents and insects; check bins every couple of weeks and run aeration when grain is warmer than the outside air.
