Homesteaders know a stable\u2019s sounds and smells. Before the rush of spring, Scripture tells us to order our work wisely \u2014 to think through the field before the house. The Good Shepherd knows every one of His flock by name and carries the weakest close. Our patient care for newborn animals is a small picture of His care for us.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Check the kidding and lambing kit, and spend a few unhurried minutes with the expectant mothers.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">February 16\u201328<\/span><strong>Mending the Wall<\/strong><small>Proverbs 24:30\u201331<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cI went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.\u201d<\/p><cite>Proverbs 24:30\u201331 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>A broken fence is rarely one day\u2019s neglect; it is many small repairs put off. The same is true of our habits of prayer and of our homes. The wise one waits for the soil and the season. What goes into the ground in faith comes up multiplied. Jesus points us to the wildflowers in the pasture. They do not worry, and God clothes them in glory. We work hard, but we need not work anxiously.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Take a slow walk in the pasture or woods with no task in mind, and notice what is blooming.<\/p><\/details><\/div><h3 class=\"hs-section-title\" id=\"season-summer\">Summer<\/h3><div class=\"hs-devotion-list\"><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">June 1\u201315<\/span><strong>Hay Time<\/strong><small>Proverbs 27:25<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cThe hay appeareth, and the tender grass sheweth itself, and herbs of the mountains are gathered.\u201d<\/p><cite>Proverbs 27:25 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>There is a short window when the grass is just right and the weather holds. The wise homesteader watches for it and goes to work. God gives the growth; we are called to gather it while it is ready.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Watch the forecast for three dry days to cut hay, and count how many bales the animals will need for winter.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">June 16\u201330<\/span><strong>Wheat and Tares<\/strong><small>Matthew 13:30<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cLet both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.\u201d<\/p><cite>Matthew 13:30 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>Not every weed can be pulled without tearing up the crop. Jesus reminds us that final judgment belongs to Him, not to us. Our job is to tend faithfully and leave the sorting to the Lord of the harvest.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Weed the garden in the cool of the morning, and pray for patience with someone who is hard to love.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">July 1\u201315<\/span><strong>Living Water<\/strong><small>John 4:14<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cBut whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.\u201d<\/p><cite>John 4:14 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>In the heat of summer, water is everything: full troughs, deep watering, shade for the animals. We know thirst well in July. The ant does not wait for winter to think about winter. Putting food by is wisdom, and a full pantry becomes a blessing to share.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Put up one batch of something this week, and set a jar aside to give away.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">August 1\u201315<\/span><strong>Firstfruits<\/strong><small>Proverbs 3:9\u201310<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cHonour the LORD with thy substance, and with the firstfruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy presses shall burst out with new wine.\u201d<\/p><cite>Proverbs 3:9\u201310 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>The first ripe tomato, the first honey, the first eggs from new pullets: firstfruits remind us that everything comes from God. Giving Him the first, not the leftovers, keeps our hearts grateful.<\/p><p class=\"hs-devotion-week\"><strong>This week:<\/strong> Offer the best of this week\u2019s harvest to your church, a widow or a neighbor in need.<\/p><\/details><details class=\"hs-card hs-devotion-item\"><summary><span class=\"hs-hub-kicker\">August 16\u201331<\/span><strong>Leave the Corners<\/strong><small>Leviticus 19:9<\/small><\/summary><blockquote><p>\u201cAnd when ye reap the harvest of your land, thou shalt not wholly reap the corners of thy field, neither shalt thou gather the gleanings of thy harvest.\u201d<\/p><cite>Leviticus 19:9 (KJV)<\/cite><\/blockquote><p>God built generosity into Israel\u2019s farming. The corners and gleanings belonged to the poor and the stranger.
